Crisis memory 2.0: August 2017

August saw a fair amount of sexism and employee-related cases. The month is still a little weak in terms of cases. 59. Auchan

Location of crisis: Facebook

Place of dissatisfaction: Twitter / Facebook

Crisis level : 1

Auchan has marketed shopping bags with the slogan: "Hooray, I got my man's credit card". Next to an illustration of a woman raising her arms to the sky. Very quickly, outraged reactions emerged on social networks and caused a crisis. Auchan responded by withdrawing the bags from sale and using humour as an argument. Marlène Schiappa even reacted to the controversy. Teaching: Totally avoidable.

A Google employee stated in an internal memo that women are predestined for "social or artistic careers". The controversy lasted for many days, not really via social networks, but through statements by Google employees who said that this behaviour was usual. Lesson: Typical case of an employee, but with deportation to HR policy.

Speaking to Léa SAlamé, Veolia CEO Antoine Frérot said that his children did not do apprenticeships because they were "brilliant at school". And yet he was an advocate of apprenticeships.

In response to these statements, Twitter went into overdrive to express the fact that this was class contempt. Veolia responded via the CEO and Twitter: "Some of the comments I made this morning on France Inter may have come as a shock, and I regret that. Teaching: A typical case of problematic comments from a CEO

There's a lot of controversy surrounding the fact that 3-year-old Noah's dream didn't come true. A British motherblogged about the Disneyland Paris theme park's refusal to allow her son to take part in the "Princess for a Day" activity, saying:

"Dear Mrs McLean, thank you for your email and interest in Disneyland Paris. At the moment, it is not possible to book 'Princess for a Day' for a boy".
In the end, Disney apologised and backtracked. Teaching: Standard procedures are not always good.

The leather goods company has launched a competition for an internship:

They had to come up with a communication plan to win the prize. The fact that so many tests had to be passed for a simple internship caused many Italians to react on social networks. The company did not back down, although it did apologise for "the lightness with which it treated such a delicate subject as work". Teaching: The context of unemployment plays a major role in the interpretation of messages.
65. Le Carré-Annexe

Location of crisis: Facebook

Place of dissatisfaction: Facebook

Crisis level : 1

A nightclub has caused controversy on Facebook because of an evening with the slogan: "The shorter the better." The Carré-Annexe, located in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, offered an option where the shorter the skirt, the cheaper the drinks. Numerous comments were made against this, especially as it combined alcoholism and sexism.

Education: Buzz for buzz's sake.
